As well as celebrating these fantastic pieces of poster art, this will give audiences a feel of the types of short films, animations and music videos they will be able to experience across the festival.

Situated in Keel Square, this striking modern structure features one of the UK’s largest semi-transparent LED screens, measuring an impressive 20m x 5m. Below the screen is a versatile events space, perfect for a variety of occasions and experiences.

Designed to educate, inspire and influence, the Pavilion represents a bold step forward for Sunderland as a Smart City and a hub for innovation. In collaboration with Culture House, its programme promises to captivate and engage visitors through an exciting mix of exhibitions and live events. In advance of Culture House opening its doors later this year, the Pavilion will serve as a space for the local community to explore emerging technologies and experience multimedia storytelling aimed at captivating the imagination of audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

IN THE VEINS: THE NORTH EAST FILM ARCHIVE AT SUNDERLAND SHORTS

17:00 – THE David Puttman Media Centre Cinema

‘In the Veins’ is a short film that resonates through time, using over a century of archive footage to shine a light onto the face of the mining heritage of Yorkshire and the North East of England.

“Some people have blood running through their veins, I think we’ve got coal dust!” ~ Miner’s daughter

A story of hardship and hope, division and defiance, perseverance and pride; this is not a history lesson, it’s an emotional journey that digs deep into the heart of a community built on coal.

This screening will be followed by a discussion by Graham Relton, Archive Manager of Yorkshire and North East Film Archive and Sunderland Shorts Festival Director Chris Allan, looking into the work the Archive does and uncovering the process of this significant film.
